Mobile jail reports 6th dead inmate in just over 6 months
Officials at Mobile Metro Jail have reported finding an inmate dead in his cell — the sixth inmate to die in the Mobile jail in just over six months.
According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, which operates the jail, 63-year-old Elvin Craig Stacey of Pensacola was found unresponsive in his cell Monday night just after 8:30.
Stacey was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead within an hour of being found in his cell.
Stacey had complained of chest pains and heart failure when he was arrested Nov. 16 on charges of attempting to elude police, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was monitored by medical personnel for a few hours and then released, according to the sheriff’s office.
Following his release from the hospital, Stacey was transported to the jail, where he was booked on the listed charges. Due to his medical issues, he was placed in the jail’s medical “wedge,” or unit. Unable to post $10,500 bond, Stacey remained in the jail’s medical unit until he was found unresponsive Jan. 1.
The sheriff’s office says initial investigation indicates no foul play was involved in Stacey’s death. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
On Dec. 14, 77-year-old William Franklin was found dead in his cell in the Mobile Metro Jail mental health wedge, the fifth inmate death at Mobile Metro Jail since last June. The others were:
- On June 26, the sheriff’s office reported 38-year-old Ernest James Little Jr. was found unresponsive by his cellmates. Corrections officers administered Narcan, an over-the-counter treatment for opioid overdose, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
- On July 15, 30-year-old Terrell Markuise Moultrie was found dead in his cell, with investigators finding no evidence of foul play or trauma.
- On July 25, 46-year-old William Gerald Appling Jr. was found unresponsive in his cell, transported to a local hospital, and pronounced dead. Appling was taken to the jail’s medical clinic when he arrived July 19 due to injuries suffered in an assault prior to his arrest by the Prichard Police Department, according to the sheriff’s office.
- On Aug. 15, William Gregory Hooper, 60, was found dead in his cell and pronounced dead a short time later. Hooper had been jailed on a public drunk charge a week earlier and jail officials said Hooper was suffering from multiple health issues and was being monitored by the jail medical staff.
No information on autopsy or toxicology reports related to any of the inmate deaths has been released.
