Pedestrian struck, killed while picking up spilled luggage on Daphne highway

A woman died Tuesday morning when she was trying to retrieve luggage which had apparently fallen off her vehicle.

Daphne police chief Brian Gulsby said his department initially received a report of a woman in the roadway on State Highway 181 near Rigsby Road, trying to retrieve spilled luggage.

Seven minutes later, a call came in to police dispatch reporting a pedestrian had been struck in the same area.

Police and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and found a 46-year-old female dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Initial investigation indicates the vehicle which struck the woman was traveling north on Highway 181 and neither alcohol nor excessive speed is believed to have been a factor in the accident, although the investigation into the incident continues, Gulsby said.
