Senior Bowl moves free Nelly concert; show still follows Mobile’s 1st Mardi Gras parade of season

It’s time for your best “Hot in Herre” joke: A free Feb. 4 Nelly concert in Mobile has been relocated due to “extraordinarily high levels of social media engagement and general public interest.”

That’s the word from the Reese’s Senior Bowl, which announced the change on Thursday. The Nelly concert was to take place in Cathedral Square but has now been relocated the larger space at Mardi Gras Park.

Either way, it promises to be a big night. The concert is part of the pregame festivities for the game on Feb. 5. But Feb. 4 will also be the night of downtown Mobile’s first Mardi Gras parade of the season. A Senior Bowl parade will roll just ahead of the Conde Cavaliers, who’ll start at 6:30 p.m. The Nelly concert will follow at about 8 p.m., after the parade ends.

In addition to being larger than Cathedral Square, Mardi Gras Park also sits closer to the beginning of Parade Route A, meaning the parade cleanup brigade can pass through and final concert preparations can begin that much sooner.

“The immediate buzz generated by the original Nelly announcement in early December made this move from Cathedral Square to Mardi Gras Park an easy decision,” said Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy. “The social media traction and word-of-mouth excitement in the community have been through the roof. Nelly has mass appeal across all demographics, so we anticipate a much larger crowd than Cathedral Square could reasonably hold.”

Nelly enjoyed an impressive run of Top 10 hits from 2000 to 2010, with mainstream songs including “Country Grammar,” “Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre,” “Dilemma,” “Shake Ya Tailfeather,” “Just a Dream” and “Grillz.” He also has appeared in a variety of roles in film and TV, including dramatic roles and reality-based shows, and in recent years has collaborated with country group Florida Georgia Line.

“The goal of adding the player’s Mardi Gras parade and concert four years ago was to show appreciation for the City of Mobile, our local downtown businesses, and all our loyal game supporters along the Gulf Coast,” added Nagy. “We feel like Nelly’s performance at a cool venue like Mardi Gras Park with our downtown skyline as the backdrop will create great memories for everyone who attends. We’d like to thank Mayor Stimpson and the City of Mobile Parks & Recreation Department for their cooperation with this move”.
