Alabama football’s strongest guy on the team? Tide players agree on one person

At the Rose Bowl’s Media Day event before the New Year’s Day kickoff, we had access to every Alabama football player on the roster.

So we wanted to hear it straight from the source(s). We asked the Crimson Tide stars to name the fastest player on the team, but we also wanted to know: Who is the strongest guy on the squad?

With plenty of size and strength across the board in a lineup filled with future NFL draft picks, you’d think we’d hear a flurry nominations — maybe even lineman and linebackers declaring themselves the mightiest to wear the crimson and white. But that was not the case at all — at least not among the handful of players we polled.

The results were near-unanimous: Jaeden Roberts. Several players simply did not hesitate when asked. Roberts is the answer, and it isn’t even close, according to the guys who actually share a weight room with the redshirt sophomore from Houston.

Listed at 6-foot-7-inches and 316 pounds, Roberts can apparently lift anything.

“He can put up the most weight in the weight room with no technique,” said offensive lineman Tyler Booker. “He’s just naturally strong.”

His defensive line counterpart Justin Eboigbe concurred. “Hands down, Jaeden Roberts,” he said. When told most of his teammates also named Roberts, Eboigbe responded, “Of course. You see it.”

Linebacker Jihaad Campbell said the same. “Dude’s strong. He’s a strong man.”

Not all Bama players would grant Roberts the title, simply because they believe in their own strength, including guys you might not expect.

Wide receiver Kendrick Law insisted, “I’m the strongest player.” He also said he was the fastest, so the young man does not lack confidence, or versatility. “I’m the strongest and the fastest. I do it all.”

Defensive lineman Jaheim Oatis nominated himself, too, when asked who the strongest Alabama player is. “You’re looking at him,” he said.

Linebacker Dallas Turner picked a different offensive lineman. “JC Latham,” he said. “That guy squats like 1,000 pounds, I believe.”

But in the end, the votes fell to Roberts in a runaway.

Running back Jase McClellan said so, quickly: “He’s just big. Just look at him,” he said. “He’s like a miniature Hulk.”

Center Seth McLaughlin also threw a vote in for his fellow offensive lineman. “He’s just a freak of nature,” he said. “Anything we put on the bar he can pick up and move it really fast. It’s really fun to watch him in the weight room.”

Final vote tally (among the players we asked): Jaeden Roberts 5, JC Latham 1, Kendrick Law 1, Jaheim Oatis 1.
