Alabama meets Michigan in the Grandaddy of Them All, the Rose Bowl, in what oddsmakers predict to be a matchup that goes down to the wire.
Alabama vs. Michigan odds outlook
The Wolverines hold a sterling 13-0 record and excel at every position group. However, Big Blue faced the weakest schedule of the four CFP teams and didn’t play a ranked opponent until Week 11.
J.J. McCarthy’s performance is the most important factor for Michigan to win and advance to the National Championship. McCarthy doesn’t lack experience in his third season in Ann Arbor but wasn’t asked to do much in Michigan’s biggest wins of the year vs. Penn State and Ohio State.
If Alabama contains Michigan’s physical rushing attack, can J.J. take the reigns and consistently make plays to keep Big Blue in the game? Alabama gives up only 188 passing yards per game thanks to its top-tier defensive line and secondary.
The Crimson Tide enter the Rose Bowl dripping with confidence after a superb showing against back-to-back National Champion Georgia in the SEC title game.
Alabama vs. Michigan best bets: Alabama moneyline (+108 or better)
The Wolverines’ defense ranks in the top three in the red zone and points, passing yards, and total yards allowed per game. However, Big Blue’s toughest QB matchup was Kyle McCord, who isn’t nearly as talented as Jalen Milroe.
Alabama’s offense has the unique threat of hitting explosive passes while forcing defenses to worry about Milroe taking off and breaking big runs. The Crimson Tide’s rushing stats don’t back it up, but Bama’s offensive line bullied Georgia in the SEC Championship game. Bama didn’t pick up more yards on the ground because of Jase McClellan’s absence, and he’s expected to suit up vs. Michigan.
Michigan has benefited from facing inferior offenses throughout the year, which has gifted the offense favorable field position more often than not. The Wolverines likely won’t have that luxury against the best offense they’ll face this season.
Alabama vs. Michigan best bets: Roman Wilson over 40.5 receiving yards (-115 or better)
Roman Wilson is Michigan’s top receiver, reeling in 41 catches for 662 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Hawaii native’s yardage numbers haven’t been impressive in the second half of the season, and he’s gone over his receiving prop in just two of Big Blue’s last six games.
Michigan likely won’t beat Alabama in the Wolverines’ typical run-heavy fashion. With more reliance on McCarthy and the passing game, Wilson should receive an expanded workload.
