Ahead of the annual MoonPie Drop in Mobile to bring in the new year, Mobile police say they plan to carry out additional safety measures.

Last year, one person was killed and nine were injured after a shooting in downtown Mobile on New Year’s Eve.

“The Mobile Police Department is fully committed to a safe and joyous time as we welcome the new year,” Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine said.

MPD has allocated additional officers, including those on traffic patrol, bike patrol, horse-mounted patrol, foot patrol and undercover officers, to cover the event. Uniformed officers, police say, will be “highly visible” throughout the events.

“Patrol vehicles will be easily recognizable by their steady blue lights, symbolizing public safety awareness,” Prine said. “Our goal is to create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all citizens and visitors in the Port City.”

A taxi service in Mobile, zTrip, is also offering free rides of up to 5 miles to discourage drunk driving on New Year’s Eve. The service offers no surge pricing, professional and licensed drivers, the ability to pay cash or card in the car or use the app to pay, according to the city’s website.

Cars can be hailed by using the zTrip app or calling dispatch at (251) 476-7711. Trips exceeding 5 miles will be subject to standard fees.
