Alabama analyst, once an Auburn assistant, lands new FBS job

Cornelius Williams, an offensive analyst on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama this past season, will join New Mexico as the Lobos’ receivers coach, ESPN reported Thursday.

Williams has extensive ties to the state of Alabama. The Mobile native played at Hoover High School and then Troy in the late 2000s before coaching at North Alabama, Jacksonville State, UAB, Troy and Auburn.

Williams joined Bryan Harsin’s staff in January 2021 but was fired four games into his first season.

Saban hired Williams in early 2022 as an analyst, one of 13 on the Tide’s staff this season. Others included former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger, former Tennessee coach Derek Dooley and former Georgia and Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

Williams will rejoin Bryant Vincent on New Mexico’s staff. The Lobos’ new offensive coordinator served as UAB’s interim head coach last season, but was the Blazers’ offensive coordinator in 2014 when Williams served as UAB’s wide receivers coach.

Williams is the fourth known departure from Alabama’s staff this offseason. Safeties coach Charles Kelly became Colorado’s defensive coordinator, analyst Alex Mortensen was hired by new UAB coach Trent Dilfer as offensive coordinator, and special assistant to the head coach Drew Svoboda joined North Texas’ staff as special teams coordinator.
