Basketball roundup: Hoover girls whip Hazel Green

The Hoover girls rolled over Hazel Green 40-29 on Thursday in the host team’s BallN Prep Holiday Invitational, handing the Class 6A No. 1 and six-time defending state champion Trojans their third consecutive loss.

Hazel Green had not lost three straight since the 2013-14 season, Tim Miller’s first season leading the Trojans. The Trojans (14-4) lost their last two games in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Mesa, Ariz., last week to nationally ranked Folsom, Calif., and Miami Country Day.

Krystle Johnson’s Hoover squad, the three-time defending state Class 7A champion and ranked fifth this season, also beat the Trojans last season to end their state record 87-game winning streak.

On Thursday, Hoover led 9-7 after one quarter and 17-13 at the half. The Bucs carried a 28-19 advantage into the final period.

Kaitlyn Gipson led the Bucs (7-4) with 15 points. Aaliyah Blanchard had a double-double in the win with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Khloe Ford and Kamryn Lee had 6 points each.

Only three players scored in the loss for Hazel Green – six Trojans were held scoreless. Amiya Redus led Hazel Green with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Leah Brooks scored 11.

Hoover will play Toledo (Ohio) Rogers on Friday to close out the first half of its season.

In other BallN Prep action:

Huntsville 56, Sumter Central 20

The 7A Crimson Panthers raced to a 14-2 lead after one quarter and led 22-3 at the half over Class 4A Sumter Central. Huntsville carried a 37-13 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Virginia Hawkins led Huntsville with 17 points. Abby Johnson tossed in 15 in the win.

Jakyler Smith and Shaniya Brown led Sumter with 6 points each.

Mount Paran Christian (Ga.) 60, Minor 42

The Eagles from Kennesaw, Ga., pulled away with a big fourth quarter to pick up the win at Hazel Green on Thursday. Mount Paran led 21-19 at the half and 35-29 after three quarters before outscoring the Birmingham team 25-13 in the final period.

Ciara Alexander led Mount Paran with 18 points, 13 in the second half. Alexander hit 5-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter after making 1-of-7 in the first three quarters. Jessica Fields tossed in 16 points for the winners, 12 in the final quarter.

Quantrese Washington led Minor with 20 points, 12 in the second half. Brianna Adams added 7 for the Tigers before fouling out.

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 47, Sparkman 36

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa won the battle of second-ranked teams on Thursday. The Class 6A Patriots led 14-11 after one quarter, 24-22 at the half and 38-27 headed into the fourth over 7A Sparkman.

Jarrah Branch led Hillcrest with 12 points. Ny Davis scored 11 points for the winners, hitting three 3-pointers in the first half. Sinaya Gibson added 8 in the win.

Abethany James led Sparkman with 13 points. Jamya Griffin added 12 points.

Pisgah 52, Sumter County (Ga.) 27

The Eagles rolled past Sumter County of Americus, Ga., on Thursday.

Keyarria Stokes notched a double-double for the winners, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Tamya Smith also scored 16 for Pisgah. She finished with 6 rebounds.

Madison County 52, North Jackson 47

The Tigers led 23-20 at the half and 34-33 headed into the final quarter in the win on Thursday.

Sydney Gurley led Madison County with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Hadley Husband scored 12 and Kaylee Putnam added 10 in the win.

Alley Stubblefield scored 14 points for North Jackson. Avery Wynne had 8 points in the loss.

WEST MORGAN HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Danville 52, Addison 24

The Hawks whipped Addison on Thursday at West Morgan High School. Adily Alberti led Danville with 18 points. Ella Kate Tidwell added 7. Alberti and Tidwell had 4 rebounds each.

SUPREME COURTS CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

Prattville Christian 61, Mortimer Jordan 48

The top-ranked Class 4A Panthers had three players finish in double figures in the win over Mortimer Jordan in Guntersville. The Blue Devils are ranked third in Class 6A.

Kayden Carr led Prattville Christian with 29 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Jenna McClendon tossed in 14 points and claimed 6 rebounds. Avery Rogers scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Leah Cate Wilson also had 5 rebounds for 13-3 PCA.

Prattville Christian will meet Sparkman on Friday in the BallN Prep Holiday Invitational at Hazel Green.

BORDER WARS CLASSIC

James Clemens 59, Gulf Shores 44

The Class 7A Jets knocked off Class 5A No. 4 Gulf Shores on Thursday in the tournament at Athens High School.

James Clemens led 11-5 after one period and 28-14 at the half. Gulf Shores (14-5) trimmed the lead to 38-31 in the third period and 40-38 at the beginning of the fourth, before the Jets pulled away.

Jazmine Grigsby led James Clemens with 21 points.

Maya Griffin led Gulf Shores with 10 points and 4 assists. Maggie Myers, Keyona Royal and Alyssa Thompson finished with 8 points each for the Dolphins.

Gulf Shores plays Franklin County of Winchester, Tenn., on Friday to conclude the Classic.

HUNTSVILLE CITY CLASSIC

Huntsville 82, Sparkman 51

The top-ranked Class 7A Crimson Panthers rolled over Sparkman, outscoring the Senators 57-12 in the paint and getting 30 points to 12 for Sparkman off turnovers in the tourney quarterfinals Thursday morning.

Huntsville made 18-of-19 free throws, shot 51.8 percent from the floor and 46 percent from behind the 3-point arc. The Panthers outrebounded Sparkman 35-18 and held the Senators to 37 percent shooting from the floor. Sparkman made 11-of-20 from behind the arc.

Caleb Harrison poured in 30 points, hitting 11-of-18 of his shots from the floor – including his lone 3-pointer attempt – and all seven of his free throws. Harrison also led the Panthers with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Eli Stapler scored 13 in the win and JD Gossett scored 11. Simon Walker had 6 rebounds.

Eli Bannister led Sparkman (6-13) with 23 points. Makhi Hammond added 12. Orlandis Beale led the Senators with 4 rebounds and Caleb Lightford had 4 assists.

James Clemens 54, Bob Jones 48

The Jets won the quarterfinals battle of Madison rival schools, jumping in front of Bob Jones 27-22 at the half after trailing 13-12 after one quarter and extended the lead to 38-32 headed into the final period.

The winners shot 38.5 percent from the floor and made 5-of-13 free throws. Bob Jones hit 39.1 percent of its field-goal attempts and was perfect on six free throw tries. Bob Jones outrebounded the Jets 31-28.

Bryce Mason led James Clemens’ balanced attack with 11 points. Noah Gorman added 10 and Isaiah Cleaves had 9. Cleaves also claimed 8 rebounds to lead the Jets (12-4).

Kaden Rickard scored 10 points for the Patriots and Ethan Whorton added 9. Eric Marrow had 8 rebounds to go with 8 points.

Grissom 53, St. Pius X (Ga.) 41

Grissom dominated inside to beat the Golden Lions from Atlanta in the quarterfinals, scoring 43 points in the to 22 for St. Pius X Catholic. The Tigers pulled away in the second half after leading 21-18 at intermission. Grissom led 39-33 headed into the final quarter.

Justin McCall scored 17 points and had 3 assists for Grissom (11-9). TJ Cole scored 13 and Landen Williams had 9. Brandon Martin led the winners with 6 rebounds.

Ryan Kim and D’Marley Elliott scored 8 points apiece to lead St. Pius X.

Austin 42, Centennial (Tenn.) 37

The Black Bears improved to 15-3 on the year with the quarterfinals win over the Cougars from Franklin, Tenn. Austin led 9-5 after one quarter, 18-14 at the half and 28-20 after three quarters.

Jordan Johnson led Austin with 13 points. He also had 6 rebounds. Isaiah Fuller scored 12 while Caiden Ricks claimed 11 rebounds to go with his 8 points.

Dominic Reed led Centennial with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Carter Ezell scored 10.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

SUPREME COURTS CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

Decatur 53, Prattville Christian 51

Brady Roberson led Prattville Christian with 21 points and 6 rebounds in the loss at Guntersville. Cade Segars scored 20 points and finished with 6 steals.

PJ Evans had 8 assists for PCA (8-9).

Prattville Christian plays Jacksonville on Friday.

RAIDER HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL

Boaz 58, Decatur Heritage 43

The Pirates trailed 15-13 after one quarter, but pulled ahead by halftime at 26-23. Boaz led 38-34 headed into the final period.

Jakai Hudgins led Boaz with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Anderson Lambert scored 12, all on 3-pointers, and Amin Cruz added 9.

Brady Wilson led Decatur Heritage with 21 points, 12 in the opening half. Nash Thomas added 7.

American Christian 67, Oakwood Adventist Academy 64

The Patriots from Tuscaloosa edged Oakwood on Thursday in the game at Randolph School in Huntsville, outscoring the Mustangs 30-29 in the first half and holding a 1-point edge in the third and fourth quarters.

Davis Dare led American Christian with 27 points – 14 in the second half. Samuel Holt tossed in 20 in the win. Hunter Bates scored 13 for ACA.

Will Lewis led Oakwood with 21 points, scoring 10 in the third period and 8 in the fourth. Jadon Williams scored 17 in the win. Daniel Jones added 10 for the Mustangs.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

GULF COAST HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Vigor 64, Saraland 47

Al Holcomb scored 20 points to lead the Wolves to the opening-day win over Saraland on Thursday in the Classic at Spring Hill College in Mobile.

P.J. Holley and Devin Whitsett added 8 points apiece for Vigor.

The Wolves will Chattanooga Central on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Central beat Spanish Fort 53-44 in the opening round.

BIRMINGHAM

BIG ORANGE CLASSIC

Hoover 96, Oxford (Miss.) 53

The Class 7A second-ranked Bucs rolled past Oxford, Miss., to open the Big Orange Classic at Hoover. The Bucs led 21-14 after one quarter and 46-29 at the half. Hoover outscored the Chargers 29-4 in the third period.

All 11 Hoover players scored in the rout, led by DeWayne Brown’s 27 points. Salim London scored 17 and Jarett Fairley added 13.

Hoover plays Escambia of Pensacola, Fla., on Friday at 6 p.m.
