The Buffalo Bills have signed former Alabama safety Jared Mayden for their active roster, the NFL team announced on Wednesday.

Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday night during Buffalo’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals and is in critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

While the NFL has postponed the Bills-Bengals game after suspending play on Monday night, Buffalo has a contest against the New England Patriots at noon CST at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.

Hamlin has started the 13 games since former Pro Bowler Micah Hyde went out for the season with a neck injury in the second contest.

While Mayden will not replace Hamlin in the lineup, Hamlin’s likely replacement Jaquan Johnson has 228 special-teams plays this season.

This is Mayden’s second stop with the Bills in 2022.

Mayden started the year with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he went on injured reserve on Aug. 17. Released from IR on Sept. 20, he joined the Buffalo practice squad on Oct. 10 and stayed until his release on Nov. 3. Two days later, Mayden joined the New York Jets practice squad, and the Bills signed him for their active roster from there.

Mayden has not played this season, but he has played in six NFL regular-season games since entering the league as an undrafted rookie with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.

Mayden had 24 special-teams plays in two games for the 49ers in 2020, and 38 defensive snaps and 62 special-teams plays in four games with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021.
