Alabama stays local for signing day flip, adds top-5 RB Kevin Riley

Alabama football has secured another flip on national signing day. Less than one hour after flipping Aeryn Hampton from Texas, the Crimson Tide stayed local and secured a commitment from Tuscaloosa County running back Kevin Riley.

Riley had given Miami and former UA assistant Mario Cristobal a verbal pledge in June but saw late interest from both the Tide and Auburn. He was recruited by his future Alabama position coach Robert Gillespie.

Riley was listed as a four-star and fourth-ranked running back in the country per 247Sports composite. Overall, Riley is a top-100 prospect and the 10th Alabama has added this cycle. He was 13th among seniors on AL.com’s A-List, scoring eight touchdowns and averaging 6.16 yards per carry. Riley produced 888 total yards while missing over two games.

“Kevin can do so many things,” Tuscaloosa County coach Adam Winegarden said in April. “You could put him at slot or at safety in addition to all the things he can do at running back. I think in the right college program and with consistency from his end, I think he could blossom into a great player on the Division 1 level.

247Sports national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna wrote his evaluation of Riley as a runner earlier this year: “Upright inside runner that exhibits good patience and vision at the line of scrimmage. Shows the ability to change speeds and accelerates quickly at the second level. … tends to play his best when playing downhill with a one cut mentality. Possesses a collegiate ready frame and should be able to contribute early in a potential change of pace and or special teams role at the collegiate level.”

Alabama signed two running backs a year ago, both of whom were top-10 at their position: Justice Haynes and Richard Young. The Crimson Tide has two senior running backs on its current roster (Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams) but Riley can provide a depth option behind his fellow underclassmen and second-year breakout player Jam Miller.

Riley is the only running back Alabama has added in this cycle, though it has been in the mix for Mississippi four-star Daniel Hill (announcing on Jan. 6) and Georgia four-star Jadan Baugh. The early signing period ends on Friday.

Alabama football’s class is ranked second overall, according to most national evaluation sites.
