Alabama flips 4-star WR Aeryn Hampton from Texas on early signing day

Alabama football added a bit of spice to the first day of the early signing period for the class of 2024 on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide flipped Aeryn Hampton’s commitment from Texas, after he had initially chosen the Longhorns.

The four-star wide receiver from Daingerfield in Texas had committed to his home state’s flagship university in July. He had remained committed entering Wednesday’s action, before flipping.

Both Alabama and Texas will play in the College Football Playoff on Jan. 1. The Longhorns beat the Tide in Week 2 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Hampton was tabbed as the No. 11 athlete in the 2024 class according to the 247 Sports composite. He was the first successful flip the Crimson Tide picked up on Wednesday, after Ohio State held off a late UA push for five-star defensive lineman Eddrick Houston.

“Tracks deeper throws well and shows some body control and adjustment nuance when required,” 247Sports national recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks wrote of Hampton. “Very good screen game weapon who could also present a dangerous drag target in the short game. Plays with good initial straight-line burst that eats up cushion. Short-area twitch laterally and downhill translate well to the return game.”

Hampton, who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs in at 175 pounds, had other offers, including Texas-San Antonio, Baylor and LSU.

Alabama scored another late pickup Wednesday morning, when Canadian four-star defensive lineman Steve Mboumoa announced his college decision. The signees have been rolling in throughout Wednesday, starting at 6 a.m. when players could send the NLIs in.

Alabama picked up two five-stars even before the flipping started, with Julian Sayin and Jaylen Mbakwe both signing. The early signing period is scheduled to run through Friday, before the traditional national signing day takes place in February.
