A 53-year-old man was found shot to death inside his Bessemer home.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Hera Lorenzo Lyons.

The discovery was made Tuesday afternoon when family members were unable to reach Lyons by phone. One of them went to the residence in the 2000 block of 15th Street North and found Lyons unresponsive inside.

He was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:35 p.m.

Bessemer police Det. Justin Burmeister said he believed Lyons had been killed within a day of when he was found.

Detectives are working to determine a motive and identify a suspect.

Lyons is the 10th homicide in Bessemer this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 185 homicides, including the 10 in Bessemer.
