SEC Football by the Numbers: Hello Oklahoma and Texas
On Sept. 30, 1933, Oklahoma faced an SEC football opponent for the first time. The Sooners and Vanderbilt played to a 0-0 tie before 16,339 spectators, at the time the second-largest crowd for an Oklahoma home game (behind the 18,346 who’d seen the Sooners lose to Nebraska 44-6 in 1928).
On Sept. 21, 2024, Oklahoma will play its first conference game as an SEC member when Tennessee visits Norman. The Sooners’ current home attendance record is 88,308.
On Wednesday night, the SEC unveiled its schedule for the 2024 football season, the first for the conference with 16 teams as Oklahoma and Texas join the league.
The Longhorns will kick off their inaugural SEC schedule on Sept. 28, when Mississippi State visits Austin. Texas played an SEC opponent for the first time on Oct. 5, 1935, when the Longhorns lost to LSU 18-6 in Baton Rouge.
Oklahoma and Texas aren’t strangers to their next league-mates. They’ve played 462 football games against the SEC’s other 14 teams (although the Sooners have never played Mississippi State or South Carolina).
The newcomers have been largely successful in non-conference games against the other 14 SEC members. Texas has a 192-94-4 record, with losing series marks against South Carolina (in only one game) and Vanderbilt (which the Longhorns haven’t played since 1928). Oklahoma has a 120-49-3 record against the SEC’s existing membership.
Arkansas, Missouri and Texas A&M have appeared the most on past schedules for Oklahoma and Texas because that SEC trio had been members of the same conference as the Sooners and Longhorns in the past, which is one of the reasons the new programs’ overall records against the current SEC lineup aren’t the same as their records against SEC competition.
Against opponents who were SEC members at the time of the game, Texas has a 38-21-2 mark, including 8-0 versus Tulane and 1-0 versus Georgia Tech when those schools were SEC members. Twenty-three of those games came in bowl matchups, with the Longhorns owning a 14-8-1 mark in postseason contests against SEC members.
Oklahoma has a 15-10-2 record against opponents who were SEC members at the time of the game. When the Sooners tied Vanderbilt in 1933, the Commodores were playing their second game in the SEC’s inaugural season. Since that contest, Oklahoma has played eight regular-season games against SEC opponents and won all of them. The Sooners have a 7-10-1 record in bowls against SEC opponents during that span.
Oklahoma’s inaugural SEC schedule includes Tennessee, Auburn, Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama and LSU. In addition to their first game against South Carolina, the Sooners will make their first trips to Auburn, Ole Miss and LSU.
Texas’ inaugural SEC schedule includes Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky and Texas A&M. In addition to playing Vanderbilt for the first time in 96 years, the Longhorns will face Florida for the first time since 1940 and Kentucky for the first time since 1951.
