Man shot dead in southwest Birmingham home is city’s 3rd killing in under 24 hours

A man was shot to death in southwest Birmingham Saturday evening in the city’s third homicide in less than 24 hours.

West Precinct officers were dispatched at 5:42 p.m. to the 1200 block of Princeton Avenue S.W. on a report of a person shot.

When they arrived on the scene, they entered a home and found a man unresponsive on the floor. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said neighbors told police they heard gunshots and called 911.

She said additional details are limited.

The victim is Birmingham’s third homicide since just before 3 a.m. Saturday.

The first happened when a shootout took place in the busy Lakeview District. One man was killed, and another was injured.

No arrests have been announced.

Then, just after noon, a customer and the owner of the Pita Stop on Birmingham’s Southside got into a dispute over the customer’s food. The fight escalated and the owner fatally shot the customer.

The owner was detained for questioning.

The Saturday night homicide marked the Birmingham’s 131st homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and nine others have been ruled justified.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 182 homicides, including the 131 in Birmingham.
