Alabama synagogue receives bomb threat believed part of nationwide hoax

Authorities responded to a bomb threat sent to a Daphne synagogue on County Road 64 by a hate group Saturday morning.

The Mobile police bomb squad cleared the scene at Congregation Mayim Chayim around 10 a.m.

”Our preliminary investigation has revealed that this threat may be part of a nationwide hoax; however, this incident is still under investigation,” the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

A member of the synagogue’s security team told AL.com that one of their rabbis had received an email from an anti-Jewish group stating that bombs had been placed and would go off in a few hours. That email was sent to other synagogues in Alabama, he said.

Members of the congregation and a representative from Coastal Church, also located on County Road 64, came to show support after the threat was cleared.

The synagogue congregants, the Coastal Church rep told synagogue security, were welcome to use their space to worship if they needed. No services were taking place at the time of the threat.

”While it is unfortunate that we must spend resources on a hoax or even give this sort of activity attention, we are sharing this information out of an abundance of caution,” the Baldwin County Sheriff’s statement said. “Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of all our citizens.”
