NFL Thursday night: Raiders go zero to 63 in 4 days

The Las Vegas Raiders didn’t score a point on Sunday and had to play Thursday night against the Los Angeles Chargers without 2022 NFL rushing leader Josh Jacobs, who missed the game due to injury.

At halftime, the Raiders had 42 points – four points short of their total for the previous four games combined — moving 68 yards for a touchdown on their first possession, then getting four touchdown passes from rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell – three after Los Angeles fumbles – before halftime.

The 42-point halftime lead was the largest in franchise history for the Raiders, who then set another team record for points in a game by beating Los Angeles 63-21. Las Vegas’ point total also set a franchise record for the most points yielded by the Chargers.

In reaching those records, Las Vegas scored two touchdowns in the span of three Los Angeles snaps in the second half. Defensive tackle John Jenkins returned a fumble 44 yards and cornerback Jack Jones returned an interception 16 yards for touchdowns.

The Raiders became the first NFL team since 1950 to have eight players score touchdowns in a game.

O’Connell equaled his career total by throwing for four touchdowns against the Chargers as he completed 20-of-34 passes for 248 yards.

With Justin Herbert out because of a fractured finger, Easton Stick made his first NFL start at quarterback for Los Angeles. He completed 23-of-32 passes for 257 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The interception and one of his two fumbles were returned for touchdowns.

Seven players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Los Angeles-Las Vegas game:

· Raiders running back Ameer Abdullah (Homewood) ran for 32 yards on six carries, caught two passes for 13 yards and made two tackles on special teams.

· Raiders cornerback Jakorian Bennett (McGill-Toolen) made four tackles.

· Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson (Auburn) made nine extra-points.

· Gerald Everett (UAB/South Alabama) started at tight end for the Chargers. Everett had five receptions for 41 yards.

· Chargers safety A.J. Finley (St. Paul’s Episcopal) did not record any stats.

· Raiders offensive lineman D.J. Fluker (Foley, Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Chargers long snapper Josh Harris (Auburn) handled the snaps for five punts and three extra points.

· Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive. A quadriceps injury kept Jacobs out of the lineup.

· Raiders defensive end Malik Reed (Dothan) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Chargers punter JK Scott (Alabama) averaged 49.2 yards on five punts with a 44.4-yard net. Scott had a 47-yard punt for a fair catch at the Las Vegas 17-yard line (that moved to the Raiders 32 because of a fair-catch interference penalty), a 46-yarder for a fair catch at the Las Vegas 18, a 47-yarder returned 13 yards to the Las Vegas 30, a 46-yarder returned 11 yards to the Las Vegas 35 and a 60-yarder for a fair catch at the Las Vegas 22.

· Chargers defensive lineman Nick Williams (Minor, Samford) was designated as a game-day inactive. A shoulder injury kept Williams off the field.

· Raiders defensive tackle Byron Young (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.

Each team entered the game with a 5-8 record.
