Alabama’s Dallas Turner earns 1st-team All-America honors from AFCA
Alabama football edge rusher Dallas Turner earned first-team All-American honors from the American Football Coaches Association, which announced its teams on Thursday. Turner made four of five All-America teams used to count consensus and unanimous honors.
The Crimson Tide had two other players make the AFCA’s second-team, in cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold. Being on the second-team meant McKinstry narrowly missed out on consensus All-American status, which requires making three of the five first teams.
The five teams counted for the record books include the Associated Press, Sporting News, Football Writers Association of America and Walter Camp Football Foundation, as well as the AFCA. Turner earned first-team status from all but Walter Camp.
McKinstry was named to the Sporting News and AP first teams.
Turner was a finalist for the Bednarik Award, which goes to college football’s top defensive player. He was also named the SEC’s defensive player of the year.
The Fort Lauderdale native remained of college football’s top rushing threats off the edge in his junior season. He’s turned in 10 sacks so far on the season, along with two forced fumbles and 50 total tackles.
“Dallas has always been a really good player for us,” Nick Saban said of Turner in September. “A guy who works hard in practice every day, tries to do everything he’s coached to do. The team is important to him, he’s been a good leader on the team.”
Turner could choose to enter the NFL Draft after Alabama’s 2023 campaign concludes. However, he’ll have at least one more game in crimson and white before having to make a decision.
Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC championship game, helping the Crimson Tide make the College Football Playoff. UA will face off with Michigan in the Rose Bowl semifinal.
That game is scheduled for Jan. 1. If Alabama wins, it will play either Washington or Texas in the national championship game, held on Jan. 8 in Houston.
