Outstanding QB performance earns Super 7 Player of the Week honors
Voters decided – by resounding numbers – that Mobile Christian quarterback Damien Gatson was the top overall performer from last week’s Super 7 after the junior threw for five touchdowns as the Leopards claimed their first AHSAA state championship.
Gatson received 14,409 of the 17,021 votes cast in the final poll of the year, 85 percent of the balloting. He was selected as the Cunningham Bounds Coastal Player of the Week four times this season, including the Week 14 poll from the playoff quarterfinals. He was also the top vote-getter Week 6 and Week 10.
The 6-foot-1, 191-pounder, who is a South Alabama baseball commitment, threw for 298 yards in Class 3A No. 1 Mobile Christian’s 55-28 win over No. 2 Madison Academy on Thursday.
The Leopards’ win completed a 15-0 season and saddled Madison Academy with its only loss. Gatson led the Mobile Christian offense to a team-record 642 points, according to Alabama High School Football Historical Society research.
Gulf Shores standout Ronnie Royal finished second in the voting after running for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 22 carries in the Dolphins’ 21-14 win over Ramsay in the Class 5A title game. The North Carolina State commitment’s Super 7 performance likely will be most remembered for his leaping one-handed interception inside the 10-yard-line in the second half that ended a Ramsay scoring threat.
Clay-Chalkville quarterback Jaylen Mbakwe, who led his Cougars to the Class 6A championship in an upset over No. 1 Saraland, finished third in the voting. Mbakwe, a University of Alabama commitment, ran for 130 yards with three touchdowns and was 9-for-17 through the air for 152 yards and another TD.
Voting for the Super 7 Player of the Week ran from Sunday until Wednesday with nominees selected from official team statistics.
In Week 16, more than 19,000 votes were cast for the Super 7 and girls flag football championship player of the week polls.
