Booger McFarland says Alabama will better next year, Jalen Milroe a Heisman favorite; Finebaum agrees

Booger McFarland made a pact Wednesday during the two-hour “2024 SEC Football Schedule Reveal.”

“Regardless of what happens or what Alabama looks like in the first two weeks of the season, we’re not going to write them off. Remember, we wrote them off this year. They looked bad. Bama’s bad, and they wound up back in the playoffs.”

The Tide opens the season with home games with Western Kentucky and South Florida before heading to Wisconsin. Nick Saban’s team struggled against South Florida this season, winning 17-3 as quarterback Jalen Milroe was benched.

The rest is well-documented. Alabama’s lone loss to Texas left the Tide as dead on the side of the CFP road before running the table, including an SEC Championship Game win over Georgia. Despite the run, McFarland was vocal about the CFP committee’s decision to select the Tide over Florida State for the final four.

He later ranked the four teams participating in the playoff and where he has Alabama might surprise you.

As impressive a run as the Tide has had, but ESPN college football analyst said Wednesday we haven’t seen anything yet.

“I think their team will be better next year,” he said. “They had a lot of freshmen, especially Caleb Downs, who played a lot of downs and snaps this year.”

He also has champions Milroe has a Heisman favorite in 2024.

“We talk about Jayden Daniels winning the Heisman at LSU,” he explained. “I think Jalen Milroe will be the favorite to win the Heisman when the season starts next year. That defense will be a year older. I know you lose Dallas Turner, but, overall, the Tide’s team next year will be better than this year. And, oh, by the way, they made the college football playoffs this season.”

Finebaum put the Milroe Heisman talk in perspective.

“The thing I heard tonight that I may never get over tonight, even though I know it’s true, is the fact that Jalen Milroe may be the leader in the clubhouse for the Heisman Trophy,” Finebaum said. “He may be the favorite. Now, here’s a guy after the Texas game was pretty much relegated to Nowheresville, to throw in another word that Greg (McElroy) and I just made up. The bottom line is he was down to No. 3 on the depth chart. We didn’t know if we would see him again.

“This is one of the most extraordinary reversals of fortune I have ever seen.”
