A suspect has been charged in the shooting death of a 61-year-old man found slain inside his home near the Warrior River.

Shane Levi Ashby, also 61, is charged with murder in the slaying of Jeff Richard Herbinger.

Walker County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched Dec. 6 to a residence in the Adger/Hueytown area near the Jefferson County line. The home was in the 300 block of Cardinal Circle, which was Herbinger’s residence.

Herbinger was found dead inside. Charging documents against Ashby said he used a .22-caliber handgun to fatally shoot Herbinger sometime between Dec. 4 and Dec. 6.

A motive has not been disclosed.

Ashby was ultimately identified as a suspect. Early Wednesday, investigators took Ashby into custody in Pleasant Grove.

He is being held without bond in the Walker County Jail pending a hearing set for Dec. 25.
