A woman narrowly escaped serious injury when police say her son shot her at their south Birmingham apartment.

The shooting happened about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at 3924 Fifth Ave. South across from Avondale Park.

Authorities said the man tried to shoot his mother in the mouth but she was able to fight him off. Instead, she sustained a graze wound to the arm.

The suspect fled on foot, still armed. As of 4 p.m., he had not yet been captured.
