Rams add an Alabama alumnus for second straight day

The Los Angeles Rams started the week as the only NFL team without a player from an Alabama high school or college on the roster. Now the Rams have two after signing former Alabama tight end Miller Forristall to their practice squad on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles had signed former Alabama long snapper Carson Tinker to its 53-player active roster after placing its long snapper, Alex Ward, on injured reserve.

Forristall returns to Los Angeles after spending most of the season on the Rams’ practice squad. Los Angeles released Forristall on Dec. 5. He had joined the team on Sept. 12.

Forristall made a quick return because starting tight end Tyler Higbee missed Sunday’s 37-31 overtime loss to Baltimore with a neck injury, and tight end Hunter Long left his first start of the 2023 season because of a knee injury after playing 19 snaps against the Ravens.

Long’s injury will require season-ending surgery, Rams coach Sean McVay said on Monday.

Forristall entered the NFL in May 2021 by signing with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted rookie. He spent time on the practice squads of the Titans and the Cleveland Browns that season.

Forristall played in two games as a rookie and four in the 2022 season with Cleveland. In those games, Forristall was on the field for 27 offensive snaps and 61 special-teams plays.

Forristall signed with New Orleans on Jan. 26. With training camp about to start, the Saints put Forristall on the physically-unable-to-perform list on July 20 with an undisclosed injury. On July 24, the Saints announced Forristall had passed his physical, making him eligible to practice in training camp. But on July 25, New Orleans waived Forristall.

Forristall signed with the Browns on Aug. 4 and was waived on Aug. 26 as they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players.

The Rams play the Washington Commanders at 3:05 p.m. CST Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. At 6-7, Los Angeles is the first team out of the current NFC playoff picture with four weeks remaining in the regular season. The Rams also have the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers left on their schedule.
