Florida man indicted in killing of co-worker at Gardendale hotel

A Florida man has been indicted in the fatal shooting his co-worker during an argument at a Gardendale hotel.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted 29-year-old Juan Manuel Mendez-Hornelas with murder in the Memorial Day slaying of 25-year-old Julio Acosta Garcia of Texas.

The indictment was issued Nov. 16 and made public Wednesday.

Mendez-Hornelas was arrested in Mississippi and returned to Jefferson County several days later.

The deadly fight happened before 1 a.m. that Monday at the hotel on Thompson Street.

According to police, the co-workers were from out of state and staying at the hotel when they got into a dispute. The suspect pulled a gun, shot Garcia while they were in the parking lot, and then fled, police said.

Garcia, of Texas, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officers and detectives quickly identified the suspect. A lookout bulletin was issued over Birmingham area police radios; however, the suspect was captured by Tupelo police officers in Mississippi.

Court documents state two eyewitnesses at the scene identified Mendez-Hornelas as the shooter, and noted the shooting was also captured on surveillance video.

Mendez-Hornelas remains held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

Jefferson County District Judge Kechia Davis ruled that “no condition or combination of conditions of release will reasonably ensure the defendant’s appearance in court or protect the safety of the community.”

A GoFundMe started by Garcia’s family said he was kind, honest and hardworking.

“He was tragically taken too soon and unfairly,’’ family said in the GoFundMe.

A trial date has not been set.
