Bessemer man gets life in prison for death of his cousin who was stabbed 9 times

A Bessemer man has been sentenced in the 2020 stabbing death of his cousin.

Jefferson County Circuit Judge David Carpenter sentenced 37-year-old Alexander Tubbs to life in prison with the possibility of parole in the 2020 death of 36-year-old Jeffery Burke.

The incident happened April 8, 2020.

Bessemer police were dispatched shortly after 7 a.m. that Wednesday to a report of a home invasion in the 1700 block of Fairfax Alley. Once on the scene, they learned the resident – Tubbs – had stabbed Burke.

Burke got into his Honda Accord and fled down the alley where he crashed into a vehicle in the 1600 block of Fairfax Alley.

Neighbors heard the commotion and went to investigate. They found the wounded man who told them to call 911. He died on the scene moments later.

A man was stabbed to death during an altercation at a Bessemer home Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

Investigators determined there was no home invasion. Burke, his cousin Tubbs and two others were together during the night in the Honda Accord.

An argument ensued between Burke and Tubbs which led to the stabbing.

Burke was stabbed nine times.

Tubbs was convicted of intentional murder in September.

The case was prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Lane Tolbert and Kaemi Velez.

Tubbs was defended by attorneys Tommy Tucker and Derrick Tristan Tucker.
