A man serving life in prison was found dead in his cell at William Donaldson Correctional Facility.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Larry Jamelle Amerson. He was 38.

Correctional officers found Amerson unresponsive in his private cell at 11 a.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:36 a.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy performed Tuesday showed no evidence of trauma or foul play. The cause of his death is pending additional lab studies.

Amerson was serving a life without parole sentence for capital murder during a robbery from a 2004 conviction out of Jefferson County.

The deadly shooting happened Dec. 26, 2002, killing Crazy Bill’s fireworks stand worker Roy Lee Morrison. The killing happened on Green Springs Highway.

Morrison, a 40-year-old married father of three, was a truck leasing service manager who worked part time at the stand. He was on the telephone with his wife when he was killed.

She heard the shots and called 911.

Amerson, who was 18 at the time, confessed to the crime and pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty.

Another teen suspect also pleaded guilty in the crime.
