3 in custody after 30-minute chase through Homewood, Birmingham ends in crash

Three people are in custody after a nearly 30-minute police that started in Homewood and ended in Birmingham.

Just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, a Flock Safety camera hit on a stolen vehicle at Robert Jemison Road in Homewood.

Homewood officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused, and a chase pursued, said Sgt John Carr.

The suspect led officers on a pursuit from Interstate 65 southbound to Lakeshore Parkway and then back onto I-65 northbound. The driver exited the interstate into north Birmingham, drive through several side streets and then got onto Interstate 59/20 heading toward western Birmingham.

When the vehicle got to Arkadelphia Road, two females bailed from the car and tried to run away. They were quickly captured.

The chase continued throughout north and west Birmingham – with Star 1 helicopter hovering above – until the driver lost control and crashed into a parked car in front of a home at Avenue I and 20th Street in Ensley.

The driver was then also taken into custody.

The chase ended at just after 2 p.m. Carr said no injuries were reported.

Carr said officers recovered a large amount of illegal drugs in the stolen vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
