Alabama Sports Hall of Fame opening Bart Starr exhibit
The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inducted Bart Starr with its Class of 1976, one year before the Green Bay Packers quarterback was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
On Wednesday, Starr’s membership in the two sports shrines will come together in Birmingham when the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame opens a display featuring Starr’s gold jacket and ring.
The gold jacket and ring are emblematic of membership in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Starr’s widow, Cherry Starr, has donated the quarterback’s gold jacket and loaned his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame for display.
The ring will be on view for a limited time before being sent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, for permanent display. While Starr received the ring upon induction in 1977, the quarterback got this gold jacket in 2012.
“It’s an honor to be able to showcase Bart Starr in this way,” said Scott Myers, the chief executive office of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame is opening the Starr display in conjunction with the premiere of “Bart Starr: America’s Quarterback,” the next installment of the “SEC Storied” documentary series that will debut at 8 p.m. CST Wednesday on SEC Network.
“The film traces the story of one man who through triumph and tragedy achieved a level of greatness unsurpassed by any quarterback since,” said Keith Dunnavant, the film’s co-director, in a release from the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
A Montgomery native, Starr played at Alabama before entering the NFL as the 200th pick of the 1956 draft. But from that inauspicious start, Starr went on to lead the Packers to five NFL championships and won the Most Valuable Player Award for the first two Super Bowls. He also was the NFL MVP for the 1966 season.
The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame display will feature a fundraiser for the Starr Children’s Fund. While supplies last, anyone making an online donation to the Starr Children’s Fund through Dec. 31 will receive a Bart Starr mini-football, which can be picked up at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame’s front desk.
Bart and Cherry Starr started the Starr Children’s Fund in 2017 to help families affected by pediatric cancer. Starr Children’s Fund supports the Bart and Cherry Starr Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Children’s of Alabama, which focuses on blood and marrow transplants for children.
The Starr Children’s Fund is an outgrowth of the Starrs’ involvement with the Vince Lombardi Memorial Golf Classic. After colon cancer took the coach’s life in 1970, the Starrs became the honorary chairpersons of the inaugural Vince Lombardi Memorial Golf Classic and, through their 44 years of service to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, helped raise more than $16 million for the fight against cancer.
