James Clemens High School captured two state AHSAA state E-Sports titles Monday while LAMP, Davidson and Bob Jones high schools won one championship each as the fifth AHSAA State E-Sports Championships concluded at Huntingdon College’s Leo J. Drum Theatre.

James Clemens, coached by Pamela Paquette, won the Mario Kart competition – a best of five circuits with six races in each circuit – and the Splatoon 3 (best of five) competition. The Jets’ state titles were their second and third state E-Sports titles overall after winning the League of Legends in 2021.

League of Legends was not part of this year’s competitions – being replaced by Mario Kart and Splatoon 3. The Madison high school won 3-0 over Alabama School for Math and Science, winning all three circuits (154-80, 131-103 and 125-109) with a team of Sophia Rogers, Maddie Templeton, Abigail Holme, Julianna Ballard and bench player Emery Chambers becoming the first all-female team to win a state championship since the AHSAA initiated E-Sports as a sports competition in the fall of 2019.

The Jets beat McGill-Toolen Catholic 3-2 in the Spatoon 3 competition.

Montgomery’s LAMP High School, coached by Jarell Chisolm, beat Ashford 2-0 in all three sets to win the Super Smash state title 3-0. Bob Jones High School, also from Madison, won the Rocket League championship 4-2 over Lee-Huntsville. The Patriots’ coach is Aubree White.

In the much-anticipated Madden football competition, Davidson’s Stephen Caster swept Bob Jones’ Keith Nowicki 2-0 using the Cleveland Browns roster to beat the Seattle Seahawks 36-28 and 26-17.

Davidson, coached by Aimee Tucker, won the Madden competition for the second straight time. The Warriors snapped a three-championship winning streak by Bob Jones last spring.

The two schools have reached the finals in all four E-Sports state finals since the game was added to the lineup in fall of 2021.

Huntingdon College E-Sports Coach James Ellis managed the competition with the aid of volunteers from his collegiate team.
