Birmingham nonprofit helps central Alabama students learn to read

This year Birmingham nonprofit Better Basics has assisted around 30,000 children in their math and reading education journey through the donation of over 100,000 books to central Alabama students and other available programming.

As the organization celebrates its 30th anniversary, Executive Director Catherin Goudreau told the Lede in her Q&A this week that she is looking forward to helping more children find “the future that they want” in her second year leading Better Basics.

So, what is Better Basics and what do you guys do?

We are an education nonprofit, local to Birmingham. And we provide critical literacy support and resources in partnership with public schools. We advance student learning through our reading and mathematics intervention and enrichment programs and help build home libraries by distributing nearly 100,000 books each year.

And what schools are you guys partnered with?
