Basketball roundup: Hartselle boys knock off Good Hope

Hartselle knocked off Good Hope 72-58 on Saturday in the Randy Jones Classic at West Point High School to improve to 6-5 on the season.

The Tigers led 36-28 at the half and were up 59-44 headed into the final period.

Markus Tapscott, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound junior, led Hartselle with 22 points – 14 in the second half. Sophomore Ty Odom and junior Kohl Key scored 14 points apiece with both hitting four 3-pointers. Junior Rylan Smothers added 11 points in the win.

Junior guard Tyler Cone led Good Hope with 14 points. Junior Jacob Haynes scored 13 and senior Weston Hancock added 11.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Huntsville 72, Hoover 54

The Crimson Panthers ran their season record to 12-1 and their home winning streak to 26 games with the big win on Friday. An estimated 2,000 fans packed the gym with school officials turning people away at halftime.

Huntsville burned the nets in handing defending state 7A champion Hoover its first loss of the season after nine straight wins. The Panthers shot 60 percent from the floor and were also 60 percent (12-of-20) from behind the 3-point arc.

Hoover led 13-12 after one quarter, but Huntsville outscored the visitors 22-5 in the second period to lead 33-17 at the half. A Caleb Harrison 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the home team a 50-37 lead headed into the final quarter. Hoover’s attempt at pressure in the fourth quarter led to breakaway buckets for Huntsville and the final 18-point margin.

Brayden Rivers, a 6-7 junior guard, led Huntsville with 21 points. Rivers made 5-of-7 of his 3-point attempts. Harrison scored 18 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. JD Gossett scored 11 points with 6 rebounds and 6 assists for Huntsville. Simon Walker had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Point guard Eli Stapler had 6 rebounds to go with his 8 points.

Huntsville outrebounded the visitors 28-17, but lost the turnover battle 15-12. Hoover shot 40 percent from the floor, 28 percent on 3-pointers. Huntsville made 2-of-3 free throws while the Bucs hit 8-of-10.

Jarrett Fairley led Hoover with 19 points. DeWayne Brown scored 18. The Bucs’ season leading scorer Salim London was held to 5 points.

Decatur Heritage 59, Holly Pond 55 (OT)

The Eagles won their first Class 2A, Area 13 game at Holly Pond on Friday. Decatur Heritage trailed 27-26 at the half, led 37-36 after three periods and went into overtime at 52-all.

Hayden Page led the winners with 20 points. He also had 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a blocked shot. Brady Wilson turned in a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. He also had 6 assists with 2 blocks. Nash Thomas scored 11 with 6 rebounds and Jayden Cooper added 9 points with 3 steals.

Kollin Brown led Holly Pond with 24 points. Boston Gibbs added 10 in the loss.

St. John Paul II 75, Westminster Christian 56

The Falcons shot 47 percent from behind the 3-point arc to run away with win over Westminster Christian in the Class 4A, Area 15 game at home on Friday. St. John Paul II is 3-0 in area play while the Wildcats dropped to 0-2, 3-6 overall.

Sophomore Mark Andrzejewski tossed in 26 points, hitting 8-of-15 on 3-pointers. Senior Jaeden Harris scored 18 for SJP2, hitting 7-of-13 from the floor.

The Falcons (7-3) led 23-16 after one quarter having hit 5-of-10 3-pointers. Westminster cut the lead to 34-28 at the half as sophomore Maks Leatherwood scored 11 of his 17 points in the second period and junior Kendall Epps scored 7.

The home team exploded for 26 points in the third quarter, hitting 8-of-13 3-pointers, to take a 60-40 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Falcons made 52 percent of their 51 shots on the night while holding Westminster to 38 percent (20-for-52).

Florence 71, Muscle Shoals 61 (OT)

The Falcons snapped a three-game losing streak in the Singing River Rivalry with the home win over Muscle Shoals on Friday. Florence hit 13 3-point buckets on the night.

Bryant James poured in 33 points for Florence – 21 in the opening half. Kedrick Triplett scored 10 points for the Falcons (6-3) and Jayshod Pearson added 9.

Jalen Bowens led the Trojans (3-2) with 29 points. Luke Sasser scored 10.

Florence hosts Cullman on Monday.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Baker 58, Theodore 25

The 10-2 Hornets rolled to a 29-11 first-half lead and a 52-21 margin headed into the final period on the way to the home win on Friday.

Desmond Williams led Baker with 27 points. Dashawn Thomas added 11 in the win.

JJ Bush led Theodore with 10 points.

Baker hosts Fairhope on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Robertsdale 50, Foley 45

The Golden Bears raced to a 33-19 first-half lead on the way to the win on the road on Friday.

Tanner Williams led Robertsdale with 15 points with 5 assists. Kaden Adams scored 14 in the win.

Shaborn Oaks led Foley with 10 points.

Robertsdale (7-5) will play at St. Michael on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

UMS-Wright 67, Cottage Hill 62

The Bulldogs held on despite a furious fourth-quarter rally by visiting Cottage Hill to get the win on Friday. UMS-Wright led 55-38 after three quarters before the Warriors outscored the home team 24-12 in the final period.

Clayton Schofield poured in 39 points for Cottage Hill, 13 in the fourth period and 24 in the second half.

UMS-Wright had five players scoring in double figures, led by Sims Druhan with 17. Joe Lott and Jack Blackerby scored 11 points apiece. Finlay Lavell and Jeff Holston added 10 points each in the win.

Brantley 63, Central-Milton (Fla.) 55

Jayden Parks poured in 26 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 5 assists for Brantley in the Paxton (Fla.) Christmas Tournament.

Daylan Davis recorded a double-double in the win with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

BIRMINGHAM

Fairfield 59, Auburn 43

Class 5A Fairfield improved to 6-1 on the season with the home win on Saturday over 7A Auburn.

Milton Jones led the winners with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Josiah Jones scored 13 for Fairfield.

On Friday, the Tigers topped Parker 76-55 for another home win. Jeff Duncan scored 24 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 7 assists.

Josiah Jones and Milton Jones scored 16 points apiece for Fairfield.

Hoover 68, Buckhorn 51

The Bucs bounced back on Saturday after suffering their first loss of the season on Friday to run their record to 10-1. Hoover raced to a 23-14 first-quarter lead, was up 35-27 at the half and took a 45-38 lead into the final period.

Jarett Fairley led Hoover with 20 points. He also had 4 rebounds. Salim London scored 19 points with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. DeWayne Brown had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds with 5 blocked shots. Seneca Robinson scored 10 with 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Bucs play at McGill-Toolen on Friday at 6 p.m. Buckhorn (9-3) hosts Grissom on Tuesday.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Academy 72, B.T. Washington Magnet 18

Skyler Stovall tossed in 20 points – 18 in the first half – and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Montgomery Academy to the win on Saturday. Stovall also had 6 steals and 4 assists.

DJ Vinson also had a double-double for the Eagles, scoring 15 points and collecting 12 rebounds. He had 2 blocks and 3 steals. Brewer Welch had 11 points with 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. John Alford had 6 rebounds with 3 steals to go with 8 points.

Montgomery Academy improved to 9-2. The Eagles will play next on Dec. 19 against Wetumpka in the opening round of the Coach Jack Schweers Tournament at Trinity.

Central-Tuscaloosa 62, Tuscaloosa County 59

The Falcons earned the win at home on Friday as King Larkin scored 24 points and hauled down 10 rebounds. Jayshaun Rhodes added 11 points for Central.

Jaxson Pearson scored 13 points to lead Tuscaloosa County. Sheldrick McNeal and Calan Sullivan scored 12 points apiece and Anderius McClan added 10.

Prattville Christian 62, Marbury 50

The Panthers took third place in the Autauga County Tournament on Friday, led by Cade Segars’ 23 points and 7 rebounds.

All-tournament pick PJ Evans scored 20 points with 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists. Collier Connell had 12 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Justin Chapman had 7 rebounds and Wade Mora had 6.

PCA is 5-6 on the year and hosts Pelham on Tuesday.

GIRLS

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Lee-Huntsville 67, Mae Jemison 33

Limaya Batimba, on the night she was recognized for 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, the senior guard continued her double-double streak with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Generals’ home win on Friday. Batimba has notched double-doubles in all 11 games this season for 6-5 Lee.

Jayla Turner scored 13 points and had 5 assists for Lee. London Harris added 10 points in the win.

The Generals are 2-1 in Class 6A, Area 16.

Priceville 50, West Morgan 23

The Bulldogs improved to 6-4 on the season with the win at home on Friday.

Abby Langlois, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, led Priceville with 22 points and 7 rebounds. She also had 3 steals and 2 assists. Gracin Prater scored 9 points with 4 steals. Ashlyn Johnson grabbed 9 rebounds and Carly Nelson had 7 with 4 assists.

Chasity Rikard led West Morgan with 8 points.

Sparkman 74, Grissom 34

The Senators won their Class 7A, Area 7 opener on the road at Grissom on Friday.

Sophomore Elise McClain led all scorers with 23 points for Sparkman (8-3).

Madison Eddings had 15 points for Grissom and Ava Bell added 10.

Sparkman hosts Albertville for another area contest on Tuesday.

Danville 37, Phil Campbell 35

The Hawks won their opening Class 3A, Area 15 game at home on Friday.

Adily Alberti led the winners with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Reagan Prater added 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Sand Rock 74, Collinsville 23

The Wildcats improved to 8-2 on the year with the Class 2A, Area 12 win at Collinsville.

Katelyn St.Clair poured in 29 points to go with 6 rebounds and 4 steals for Sand Rock. Chloe Stephens had 12 points. Kennedy Henderson had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds along with 4 steals. Zoey Handy added 10 points.

The Wildcats host Gaston on Tuesday.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Fairhope 55, St. Paul’s 41

The Pirates improved to 6-5 with the road win on Saturday. Ella Byrd led Fairhope with 21 points. She also had 5 rebounds.

Peyton scored 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the win.

Fairhope travels to Baker on Tuesday.

UMS-Wright 58, Cottage Hill 27

The Bulldogs improved to 10-3 on the year with the home win on Friday.

Juniors Ansleigh Ishee and Ellie Mostellar led UMS-Wright with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

All 11 Bulldogs scored in the runaway win.

UMS-Wright will host Old Shell Road rival St. Paul’s on Friday.

Mobile Christian 48, Bayside Academy 26

The Leopards picked up the home win on Friday. Mobile Christian improved to 8-3 on the season. Kayleigh Todd led the winners with 12 points.

Misty Stone scored 16 to lead Bayside.

The Leopards host Murphy on Tuesday.

BIRMINGHAM

Woodward Academy (Ga.) 75, Hoover 69

The War Eagles from College Park, Ga., handed Hoover a setback in the Larry & Connie Davidson Classic on Saturday at Oxford High School.

Hoover led 22-14 after one quarter and 37-35 at the half before Woodward exploded to take a 10-point lead into the final quarter, scoring 27 points in the third while holding the Bucs to 15. Hoover’s fourth-quarter rally fell short.

Ariana Peagler led Hoover (6-3) with 18 points. Khloe Ford scored 17 points for the Bucs and Kaitlyn Gipson added 13.

Delany Cooper led Woodward (6-2) with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Kayla Whitner scored 20 and Kameron Herring added 16 for the War Eagles.

Homewood 47, Spain Park 21

The Patriots are 12-3 after Friday’s win at Spain Park.

Kayla Warren led Homewood with 11 points. She also had 4 steals. Mira McCool had 5 rebounds to go with her 8 points.

STATEWIDE

Prattville Christian 70, Marbury 48

Autauga County Tournament MVP Avery Rogers led Prattville Christian to its fifth straight title on Friday, scoring 24 points and grabbing 5 rebounds with 4 assists. The Panthers started their county tourney win streak in 2018 as the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Jenna McClendon had a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds for Prattville Christian. She also had 4 blocks and 4 steals.

Kayden Carr had 11 points with 9 rebounds and 7 assists.

McClendon and Carr were also named to the all-tournament team for 9-1 PCA. Prattville Christian will host Pelham on Tuesday.

Calvary Christian 42, Lakeside 28

Lakeside fell to 5-5 on the year with the loss on Friday.

Addy Helms scored 9 points to lead the Chiefs. She also had 4 rebounds. Sophie Seaborn had 5 rebounds and 5 steals.

Holtville 47, Central-Hayneville 15

The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 on the season with the road win on Friday.

Junior Ana Brown led Holtville with 23 points, 6 assists and 6 steals. She hit 6-of-10 3-point attempts and had 6 assists. Junior Ragen Roberts scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

On Thursday, Holtville beat Notasulga 45-20 for another road win.
