Storms down trees in Homewood, Hoover, Vestavia Hills: Wind gusts exceed 50 mph

The National Weather Service in Birmingham warned just before 1 a.m. Sunday that a line of storms moving through the area is bringing wind gusts up to 58 mph.

Trees are down across parts of Jefferson County, including Wellington Road near Samford University in Homewood and in several locations in Vestavia Hills and Bluff Park, the weather service reported.

Houses have reportedly been hit by trees in some places. About 34,000 Alabama Power customers across the central part of the state were without electricity as of 1 a.m.

Here are the latest Alabama weather alerts.

“This line of storms is producing pockets of damaging winds. Birmingham International Airport recently hit 58 mph,” the weather service posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

“EVERYONE ahead of this line of storms is under a risk for severe weather through the rest of tonight/early Sunday morning.”
