Baldwin County planners table controversial Spanish Fort subdivision

After Spanish Fort residents raised concerns about safety on D’Olive Road, the Baldwin County Planning and Zoning Commission tabled until February consideration of Darby Ridge subdivision, a planned 78-lot development.

“Ray Charles could see this is wrong,” commission member Danny Bolton said during the meeting. “They ought to table it and come back with a plan for that road to take that traffic.”

Baldwin County planning and zoning staff initially did not issue a recommendation for whether or not the preliminary application for Darby Ridge should be approved, due to “unresolved questions” related to fire safety standards and the sight distance to the entrance on D’Olive Road.

At Thursday’s monthly meeting of the planning commission, several people raised their concerns regarding the development, particularly the hazards of increased traffic on D’Olive Road, which they say is winding, narrow and doesn’t have sidewalks. There is only one planned entrance to the subdivision on the road.
