Suspect charged in stabbing death of Evergreen football player

A suspect is in custody, charged with murder in the stabbing death of a football player Hillcrest High School in Evergreen Thursday.

Evergreen police chief Tristin Robinson told AL.com Jimmy Clyde Clark, 33, has been charged with the murder of 18-year-old Robert Baldwin Jr.

The 18-year-old Baldwin, a senior on the Jaguars’ football team, was stabbed on Highway 83 in the West Side community of Evergreen, the Conecuh County Coroner’s office reported on social media. He was transported to Evergreen Medical Center where he was pronounced dead Thursday night.

Robinson confirmed Baldwin was stabbed multiple times. He said Clark and Baldwin had engaged in an argument, which turned physical before Clark pulled out a knife and stabbed Baldwin, according to investigators.

What prompted the conflict between the two remains under investigation.

“It’s just so tragic and unfortunate,” Hillcrest head coach Justin Nared told AL.com. “I got a phone call late last night. I didn’t get a whole lot of details. There were conflicting stories with all the information, but at the end of the day he was stabbed multiple times and later died.”

Clark has prior convictions for burglary and assault, according to court records. In 2011, he was convicted of beating a man so badly it caused multiple jaw fractures and damaged the other man’s eye. He was sentenced to three years in prison, but that sentence was suspended and he was placed on five years probation.

The 6-1, 295-pound Baldwin was a “gentle giant,” according to Nared. Baldwin was a starting defensive tackle for the Jaguars.

“We were trying to get him some junior college opportunities,” Nared said. “If that didn’t work out, we were trying to get him signed up for the military. He was such a humble kid. He was strong as an ox, but was a big, gentle giant. I hate it for our community.”
