State football semifinals Player of the Week is standout QB

The Alabama football player of the week for Week 15 – the AHSAA semifinals week – is Ramsay quarterback Kam Keenan.

It’s Keenan’s second straight week to be honored by the voters and the third consecutive week for a Ramsay player to top the voting. He was the Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week following his exploits in the Class 5A quarterfinals. Running back Ashton Ashford was the Week 13 top vote-getter.

For his performance in the semifinals, Keenan picked up 77 percent of the 10,513 votes cast from across the state.

Keenan, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior, completed 26-of-32 passes for 415 yards and three touchdowns in the Rams’ 35-14 win over Guntersville. For the season, Keenan has completed 63 percent of his 312 pass attempts for 3,196 yards and 31 touchdowns. He has thrown eight interceptions.

Keenan will lead No. 2 Ramsay into tonight’s 5A championship game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa against top-ranked Gulf Shores. The Rams are the defending champions.

PJ Brown of Mobile Christian finished second in the balloting. Brown ran for 212 yards with three TDs on 14 carries in a 34-30 semifinal win over defending 3A champion St. James.

No. 1 Mobile Christian (14-0) will play No. 2 Madison Academy (14-0) at 11 a.m. today for the 3A title.

Madison Academy’s Ken Cherry was third in the player of the week poll. Cherry ran 22 times for 188 yards and scored five touchdowns – including an 11-yard game-winner with 57 seconds left – in a 48-43 win over Geraldine.

Voting for the final player of the week opens Sunday and will run through Wednesday, based on performances in this week’s Super 7. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
