Will you get another stimulus payment in 2023?
Record high inflation – have you seen the price of eggs? – has people wondering if a COVID pandemic era lifeline could return.
Stimulus checks totaling more than $3,000 were issued in 2020 and 2021 amid the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. And while individual states have opted to issue checks, there doesn’t appear to be any momentum for the federal government to approve additional stimulus payments.
Congress has not passed any laws authorizing a fourth check and many of the pandemic-era programs such as the expanded Child Tax Credit have been allowed to expire. In order to receive a fourth stimulus payment, Congress would have to pass legislation that would require the signature of President Joe Biden.
That’s not likely to happen.
“At this time, we’re not hearing that there are plans for additional federal stimulus checks in 2023,” Mark Steber, chief tax information officer with Jackson Hewitt, recently told VERIFY.
The IRS issued three stimulus payments during the COVID pandemic: $1,200 in April 2020, $600 in December 2020 and $1,400 in March 2021.
Efforts to reinstate payments continue, however. A 2020 change.org petition calling for monthly payments of $2,000 to each American continues to garner signatures, recently passing the 3.049 million mark.
