Alabama’s Will Reichard wins SEC special teams player of the year
Alabama football kicker Will Reichard became NCAA FBS football’s all-time scoring leader on Saturday against Georgia. On Wednesday, he was named the SEC’s special teams player of the year.
The honor was voted on by the league’s head coaches. The award helps cap off a successful fifth season in Tuscaloosa for Reichard, who returned to Alabama for his fifth season in an effort to help his NFL stock.
“I think when my career’s over I’ll really care about it but right now, not too concerned about it honestly,” Reichard said of breaking the points record when asked about it in November. “I’m more focused on being able to play well this week and kind of continue to prepare to play well and continue to practice well, continue to grow. That’s what I’m concerned about, not too concerned about that right now, to be honest.”
Reichard’s season-long was 51 yards so far. He current stands at 3-for-3 from 50 yards or more in 2023.
The Hoover native has connected on 20 of his 23 field goal attempts this season. He is a perfect 53-for-53 on extra points.
Reichard’s college career isn’t over yet. He and Alabama beat Georgia for the SEC championship on Saturday, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
The No. 4 Crimson Tide will face No. 1 Michigan in the Rose Bowl. That game is scheduled for Jan. 1.
Reichard is one of three Alabama players to earn an SEC award on Wednesday. Caleb Downs was named the league’s freshman of the year, while Dallas Turner took home defensive player of the year.
