SEC Football by the Numbers: 2023 awards season

Winners of the college football awards for the 2023 season have started trickling in, but they will come in a torrent on Friday at “The Home Depot College Football Awards,” with ESPN televising the event at 6 p.m. CST.

The winners of nine player awards will be announced on the show – the Chuck Bednarik Award, Biletnikoff Award, Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, Ray Guy Award, Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, Outland Trophy, Paycom Jim Thorpe Award and Doak Walker Award. The winners of the Burlsworth Trophy, Butkus Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, William V. Campbell Trophy, John Mackey Award, Nagurski Trophy, Rimington Trophy and Wuerffel Trophy also will be recognized.

0 Tight ends have won the John Mackey Award more than once, with Georgia’s Brock Bowers among the finalists for this year’s honor after winning the award for 2022. Bowers became the SEC’s fifth winner of the John Mackey Award, following Florida’s Aaron Hernandez in 2009, Arkansas’ D.J. Williams in 2010 and Hunter Henry in 2015 and Florida’s Kyle Pitts in 2020. The Mackey Award has been presented annually to the nation’s best tight end since 2000. The other possible winners of the 24th award are Colorado’s Dallin Holker and Ohio State’s Cade Stover.

2 Consecutive years as a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award for Georgia TE Brock Bowers. Alabama LB Will Anderson Jr. won last year’s award to become the SEC’s eighth recipient. The other SEC winners of the award include Alabama LB Cornelius Bennett in 1986, Auburn DT Tracy Rocker in 1988, Georgia DE David Pollack in 2004, LSU DT Glenn Dorsey in 2007, Auburn DT Nick Fairley in 2010 and Alabama DE Jonathan Allen in 2016. First presented in 1970, the Lombardi Award changed its limitation of interior linemen, linebackers and tight ends from 2017 through 2020 to make all players eligible, and LSU QB Joe Burrow won in 2019. The award winner best embodies the values and spirit of Vince Lombardi. Joining Bowers as the possible winners of this season’s award include Notre Dame OT Joe Alt, Utah DE Jonah Elliss and UCLA DE Laiatu Latu.

3 Consecutive winners of the Burlsworth Trophy have come from the SEC after Missouri RB Cody Schrader was named the winner of the 2023 award this week. The Burlsworth Trophy has been presented annually since 2010 to the most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on, as did G Brandon Burlsworth at Arkansas. The SEC’s previous winners were Arkansas LB Grant Morgan in 2021 and Georgia QB Stetson Bennett in 2022.

3 Of the 31 Lou Groza awards have been presented to SEC players, with Alabama’s Will Reichard in the running for the 2023 honor. Presented annually since 1992 to the nation’s best kicker, the Groza Award has gone to an SEC player in 1993 with Florida’s Judd Davis, 2003 with Ole Miss’ Jonathan Nichols and 2019 with Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship. The other contenders for the 2023 Groza Award are Miami (Ohio)’s Graham Nicholson and UNLV’s Jose Pizano.

4 Consecutive winners of the Manning Award have come from the SEC, with three of the 10 finalists for the 2023 award from the conference – Georgia’s Carson Beck, LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe. The Manning Award has been presented after the bowl season since 2004 to the nation’s best quarterback. SEC QBs have won eight of the 19 Manning awards — LSU’s JaMarcus Russell in 2006, Florida’s Tim Tebow in 2008, Auburn’s Cam Newton in 2010, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel in 2012, LSU’s Joe Burrow in 2019, Alabama’s Mac Jones in 2020, Alabama’s Bryce Young in 2021 and Georgia’s Stetson Bennett in 2022. The other finalists for the 2023 award include Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, Oregon’s Bo Nix, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., Florida State’s Jordan Travis and Southern Cal’s Caleb Williams.

4 Of the past five Biletnikoff awards have been won by SEC wide receivers after the conference claimed one of the first 24 awards, with LSU’s Malik Nabers a finalist for the 2023 honor. The Biletnikoff Award has been presented annually since 1994 to the nation’s best receiver. The previous SEC winners have been LSU’s Josh Reed in 2001, Alabama’s Amari Cooper in 2014, Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy in 2018, LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase in 2019, Alabama WR DeVonta Smith in 2020 and Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt in 2022. The other possible winners of the 2023 award are Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. and Washington’s Rome Odunze.

5 SEC players have won the Nagurski Trophy, including Alabama LB Will Anderson Jr., who earned the honor in 2021 and 2022. The award has been presented annually since 1993 to the nation’s defensive player of the year and also has been presented to Georgia CB Champ Bailey in 1998, LSU DT Glenn Dorsey in 2007, Alabama DE Jonathan Allen in 2016 and Kentucky OLB Josh Allen in 2018. Georgia S Malaki Starks was among the nominees for the 2023 Nagurski Award, with Notre Dame S Xavier Watts named the winner this week.

5 Of the 23 winners of the Ray Guy Award have come from the SEC, with Vanderbilt’s Matt Hayball among the contenders for the 2023 honor, along with Florida State’s Alex Mastromanno and Iowa’s Tory Taylor. The Guy Award has been presented annually to the nation’s best punter since 2000. The SEC’s winners have been Georgia’s Drew Butler in 2009, Florida’s Chas Henry in 2010, Texas A&M’s Braden Mann in 2018 and Kentucky’s Max Duffy in 2019.

6 SEC players have won the three major Player of the Year awards – the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award – with LSU QB Jayden Daniels among the finalists for each award this year. Georgia’s Herschel Walker in 1982, Florida’s Danny Wuerffel in 1996, Auburn’s Cam Newton in 2010, Alabama’s Derrick Henry in 2015, LSU’s Joe Burrow in 2019 and Alabama’s DeVonta Smith in 2020 won the three awards since the Camp joined the Heisman and Maxwell as an annual honor in 1967. Two SEC players – Florida’s Tim Tebow in 2007 and Alabama’s Bryce Young in 2021 – won the Heisman and Maxwell but not the Camp. Two SEC players – Auburn’s Pat Sullivan in 1971 and Bo Jackson in 1985 – won the Heisman and Camp by not the Maxwell. Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa in 2018 won the Maxwell and Camp but not the Heisman. Two SEC players – Alabama’s Mark Ingram in 2009 and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel in 2012 – won only the Heisman. Four SEC players – Tennessee’s Peyton Manning in 1997, Ole Miss’ Eli Manning in 2003, Tebow in 2008 and Alabama’s AJ McCarron in 2013 – won only the Maxwell. Arkansas’ Darren McFadden in 2007 won only the Camp.

6 Of the 23 winners of the Doak Walker Award have come from the SEC, with Missouri’s Cody Schrader among the contenders for the 2023 honor, along with Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II and North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton. The Walker Award has been presented annually to the nation’s best running back since 1990. The SEC’s winners have been Georgia’s Garrison Hearst in 1992, Arkansas’ Darren McFadden in 2006 and 2007, Alabama’s Trent Richardson in 2011, Alabama’s Derrick Henry in 2015 and Alabama’s Najee Harris in 2020.

6 SEC players have won the Lott IMPACT Trophy, with Alabama LB Dallas Turner a finalist for this year’s award. Three SEC players were among the first four winners of the trophy, with Georgia DE David Pollack the inaugural recipient in 2004 followed by Alabama LB DeMeco Ryans in 2005 and LSU DT Glenn Dorsey in 2007. The SEC then had a 10-year drought until Kentucky OLB Josh Allen received the 2018 Lott IMPACT Trophy, Auburn DT Derrick Brown won in 2019 and Alabama LB Will Anderson Jr. won in 2022. The award goes to a defensive player based on his IMPACT on and off the field, with IMPACT standing for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity. The other possible winners of the 2023 award are Michigan LB Junior Colson, Utah DL Jonah Ellis and UCLA DE Laiatu Latu.

7 SEC players have won the Bednarik Award, with Alabama LB Dallas Turner among the three players who could win this year’s honor. If he does, Alabama will equal Penn State for the most Bednarik awards with four. Presented annually to the nation’s best defensive player since 1995, the Bednarik Award has included Georgia DE David Pollack in 2004, LSU CB Patrick Peterson in 2010, LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu in 2011, Alabama DT Jonathan Allen in 2016, Alabama DB Minkah Fitzpatrick in 2017, Kentucky LB Josh Allen in 2018, Georgia DT Jordan Davis in 2021 and Alabama LB Will Anderson Jr. in 2022 among its winners. Also up for the 2023 award are North Carolina State LB Payton Wilson and UCLA DL Laiatu Latu.

7 Of the 24 winners of the Rimington Trophy have come from the SEC, with Georgia’s Sedrick Van Pran among the contenders for the 2023 honor, along with Michigan’s Drake Nugent and Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson. The Rimington Trophy has been presented annually to the nation’s best center since 2000. The SEC’s winners have been LSU’s Ben Wilkerson in 2004, Arkansas’ Jonathan Luigs in 2007, Florida’s Maurkice Pouncey in 2009, Alabama’s Barrett Jones in 2012, Auburn’s Reese Dismukes in 2014, Alabama’s Ryan Kelly in 2015 and Alabama’s Landon Dickerson in 2020.

8 SEC players have won the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, with LSU QB Jayden Daniels up for this year’s honor. The winners from the SEC have been Florida’s Danny Wuerffel in 1995 and 1996, Tennessee’s Peyton Manning in 1997, Florida’s Tim Tebow in 2007, Auburn’s Cam Newton in 2010, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel in 2012, LSU’s Joe Burrow in 2019, Alabama’s Mac Jones in 2020 and Alabama’s Bryce Young in 2021. The other finalists for this year’s award are Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix, who began his college career at Auburn. The award has been presented annually since 1981 to the nation’s best quarterback.

8 SEC players have won the Butkus Award, with Missouri’s Ty’Ron Hopper and Mississippi State’s Nathaniel Watson among the five finalists for this year’s award. The Butkus Award has been presented to the nation’s best linebacker annually since 1985. The SEC’s winners have been Alabama’s Derrick Thomas in 1988, Ole Miss’ Patrick Willis in 2006, Alabama’s Rolando McClain in 2009, Alabama’s C.J. Mosley in 2013, Alabama’s Reuben Foster in 2016, Georgia’s Roquan Smith in 2017, LSU’s Devin White in 2018 and Georgia’s Nakobe Dean in 2021. The other possible winners of this year’s award are Clemson’s Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Washington’s Edefuan Ulofoshio and North Carolina State’s Payton Wilson.

8 SEC quarterbacks have won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award after LSU’s Jayden Daniels was named the recipient of the 2023 award this week. Daniels follows Alabama’s Jay Barker in 1994, Florida’s Danny Wuerffel in 1996, Tennessee’s Peyton Manning in 1997, Ole Miss’ Eli Manning in 2003, Alabama’s AJ McCarron in 2013, LSU’s Joe Burrow in 2019 and Alabama’s Mac Jones in 2020 as SEC winners of the award, which has been presented annually since 1987 to the nation’s top upperclassman quarterback.

10 Years since an SEC player won the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is presented to the player with the best combination of performance, academics and community service. The 16 finalists for this year’s “Academic Heisman” include Georgia WR Ladd McConkey (as well as two former SEC players – Oregon QB Bo Nix, who played at Auburn, and Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa, who played at Alabama). The SEC has had eight winners of the award, which has been presented annually since 1990. The SEC’s winners have been Florida’s Brad Culpepper in 1991, Florida’s Danny Wuerffel in 1996, Tennessee’s Peyton Manning in 1997, Georgia’s Matt Stinchcomb in 1998, Tennessee’s Michael Munoz in 2004, LSU’s Rudy Niswanger in 2005, Florida’s Tim Tebow in 2009 and Alabama’s Barrett Jones in 2012.

10 SEC players have won the Walter Camp Award, with LSU QB Jayden Daniels among the possible winners of the 2023 award. The Camp Award has been presented annually since 1967 to the nation’s player of the year. The SEC winners have been Alabama’s Antonio Langham in 1993, Florida’s Lawrence Wright in 1996, Auburn’s Carlos Rogers in 2004, Tennessee’s Eric Berry in 2009, LSU’s Patrick Peterson in 2010, LSU’s Morris Claiborne in 2011, Mississippi State’s Jonathan Banks in 2012, Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick in 2017, Georgia’s Deandre Baker in 2018 and LSU’s Grant Delpit in 2019.

13 SEC players have won the Maxwell Award, with LSU QB Jayden Daniels in contention to receive the 2023 honor. This year’s Maxwell Award will be won by Daniels, Washington QB Michael Penix Jr or Oregon QB Bo Nix. The Maxwell Award has been presented to the nation’s best player annually since 1937. The award is named for former Florida QB Danny Wuerffel, and it has been won by an SEC player six times – LSU C Rudy Niswanger in 2005, Florida QB Tim Tebow in 2008, Alabama OT Barrett Jones in 2011, Ole Miss MLB Deterrian Shackelford in 2014, Texas A&M QB Trevor Knight in 2016 and Kentucky LB Courtney Love in 2017. Georgia WR Ladd McConkey, Notre Dame LB JD Bertrand or Michigan RB Blake Corum will win this year’s Wuerffel Trophy.
