Stephen A. Smith contends Florida State would be in CFP if Deion Sanders was coach
If Deion Sanders were the coach at Florida State – and not Mike Norvell – the Seminoles would be in the College Football Playoff, Stephen A. Smith contends.
Florida State, which remains undefeated after beating Louisville in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday, was excluded from the playoff by the CFP committee on Sunday.
“I bet if Primetime Deion Sanders was the coach, they wouldn’t have gotten left out,” Smith said on “First Take” Monday. “Norvell is a sensational coach and has done a sensational job, and I’m not taking anything away from him.
“Why do I bring him up? Because if Primetime had an undefeated team, the sizzle he brings to the sport matters. We want to act like it doesn’t matter, but it matters because it is a business.”
Smith added TCU’s loss last season in the CFP didn’t help Florida State’s chances this year.
“It’s unfair,” he said. “We know it’s unfair. Florida State deserves better. Incredible season on their part.”
Instead, No. 4 Alabama (12-1) faces No. 1 Michigan (13-0) in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. The Wolverines didn’t appear to be thrilled with being matched up with the Tide. Still, Michigan’s Blake Corum re-iterated the Wolverines are the top dogs, though.
