More and more people are moving to Huntsville. Where are they from?

Even without the promise of U.S. Space Command, people are moving to Huntsville.

City officials such as Mayor Tommy Battle estimate the city’s population growth to be between 3,000 and 5,000 a year. The fact that U.S. News & World report has ranked the Rocket City as the best place to live and the second place to live in the U.S. the past two years hasn’t hurt. Although housing affordability is becoming an issue in Huntsville, homes are still more affordable than most large cities across the country.

The city ranks high on many quality of life lists and wage growth has made Huntsville attractive. The FBI, Blue Origin, aerospace industry and advanced manufacturers are also expanding their workforce. There are up to 14,000 jobs available in Huntsville, according to job seeker sites Indeed and Glassdoor.

Realtor Ben Wales of Redstone Family Realty said he has worked with transfers from Seattle, which like Huntsville has a large Boeing workforce. And Breland Companies President Joey Ceci told the Lede in a recent story that families locating as part of the FBI expansion at Redstone Arsenal have purchased homes in Clift Farm north of Madison.

Seattle was not among the top 10. But three of Huntsville’s Alabama neighbors are. Also on the list is Washington, D.C., which would be of no surprise given the large federal government presence in Huntsville, including the FBI.
