Report: Auburn University investigating vandalism inside Haley Center as hate crime
Vandalism with written racial and gender related slurs on a white board were reported Sunday inside an office at Auburn University’s Haley Center, the university’s student newspaper, The Auburn Plainsman, reported.
The university’s Department of Campus Safety and Security sent a campus-wide email at 6:28 p.m. about the incident, according to the newspaper’s online website. “The reporting party stated that items in her shared office were damaged, and racial and gender-based slurs were written on a white board,” the email said.
Universities are required under the Clery Act to report crimes “motivated by bias” against the victim, the newspaper reported.
The newspaper reported that according to the email a suspect has not yet been identified as an investigation by police continues. The Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Employment also were notified, according to the Plainsman report.
