An armed man who threatened suicide outside a Bessemer hospital is now in another hospital after police say he was injured during an eventual confrontation with police.

The ordeal began at 1:03 p.m. Saturday when Bessemer police were dispatched to the rear parking lot of UAB Medical West. The caller told dispatchers he was armed with a gun and wanted to die.

Officers arrived on the scene to find the man with a gun and blocked off the surrounding streets.

Negotiations began and continued for almost five hours. Roughly 20 officers were on the scene.

“After that time, the armed subject continued to approach officers,’’ Det. Justin Burmeister said in a news release. “The subject was injured on scene” and transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham by ambulance.

Police officials would not say whether the man was shot by police and, if not, how he was injured.

Burmeister said the man was conscious and communicating with officers before he was taken to UAB Hospital.

The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe.
