Alabama 1 player away from another NFL high

When Ronnie Harrison made his season debut for the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday – and contributed an interception in a 27-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – the safety-turned-linebacker became the 70th NFL player in the 2023 campaign who also played at Alabama.

Last season, Alabama became the first college program to have 70 of its former players appear in the same NFL regular season.

That also extended a streak of more Alabama alumni playing in the NFL than in the previous season to six years.

In 2016, 38 former Alabama players appeared in at least one NFL regular-season game – one fewer than had played in 2015.

In 2017, the number rose to 44, breaking the school’s single-season NFL record of 40 in 1987. The 1987 season featured a player strike and three weeks of football with replacement players.

In 2018, the Alabama alumni who played in the NFL reached 52. It jumped to 62 in 2019 and increased to 64 in 2020, 68 in 2021 and 70 in 2022.

Can the Crimson Tide get its NFL participation number up to 71 for 2023?

Harrison had spent the season on the Indianapolis practice squad before getting his opportunity to play for the first time in 2023.

Seven former Alabama players who have not played during the 2023 season are on NFL practice squads with six weeks left in the regular season – Carolina Panthers guard Deonte Brown, Los Angeles Rams tight end Miller Forristall, Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron, Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher and wide receiver Cam Sims and Buffalo Bills wide receiver Tyrell Shavers.

In 2023, 3.5 percent of the 2,015 players who have appeared in an NFL regular-season game also played at Alabama.

Three other college programs have had at least 50 of their alumni play in the NFL this season – Ohio State with 59, Georgia with 56 and LSU with 55.
