5 Alabama Republicans vote against expelling George Santos

Five of the six Republican members of Alabama’s congressional delegation voted Friday against the expulsion of Republican Congressman George Santos of New York from the U.S. House of Representatives.

The House voted 311-114 to expel Santos after an ethics report that said he used campaign contributions for personal use. Santos has pleaded not guilty to an indictment brought by federal prosecutor in New York.

A first-term lawmaker who flipped what had been a Democratic seat, Santos is only the sixth member of the House ever to be expelled.

Rep. Robert Aderholt of Haleyville was the only Republican from the Alabama delegation to vote in favor of expelling Santos, which required a two-thirds vote. Rep. Terri Sewell of Birmingham, the only Democrat in the Alabama delegation, also voted for expulsion.

Voting no were Reps. Jerry Carl of Mobile, Barry Moore of Enterprise, Gary Palmer of Hoover, Mike Rogers of Saks, and Dale Strong of Huntsville.
