Mobile police have identified the man killed in a Saturday night shooting that left nine others wounded and thousands of downtown Mobile revelers scrambling for safety.

Jatarious Reives, 24, was identified Monday as the victim from the shooting.

Police have said a male suspect is currently receiving medical treatment from an area hospital. Authorities have not released the suspected shooter’s identity, but they plan to release him to Mobile Metro Jail to be charged with murder once he is discharged from the hospital.

Reives was killed around 11:14 p.m. in the 200 block of Dauphin Street, which is a few blocks from where thousands of people gathered to celebrate during the 15th annual MoonPie Over Mobile event.

The shooting injured nine others. They ranged in ages from 17 to 57.

Social media videos from the area show a chaotic scene in downtown Mobile after the shooting occurred. But despite the shooting, the MoonPie Over Mobile event continued, including the annual countdown of the MoonPie’s descent on the RSA Trustmark Bank building.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, on Sunday, said he was “outraged” and “beyond disgusted” over the shooting and suggested that it might be linked to gang violence.

Stimpson said he met with police leaders and federal law enforcement, and confirmed that a task force has been launched to fine everyone responsible for the shooting and to hold them accountable.

“We will use every resource available to MPD and my office, and I have complete confidence that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” Stimpson said.
