Indiana hires JMU’s Curt Cignetti as football coach
James Madison’s Curt Cignetti will be the next head football coach at Indiana, the school announced Thursday.
Cignetti is 52-9 in five years with the Dukes, including 11-1 this season. He is 119-35 in 13 seasons as a college head coach at JMU, Elon and Indiana of Pennsylvania.
“I am very excited to welcome Curt Cignetti as the head football coach at Indiana University,” Indiana athletics director Scott Dolson said. “We had a very talented and deep pool of candidates, and Curt stood out thanks to an incredible track record of success over more than four decades in college football. As a head coach he’s succeeded everywhere he’s been, and as an assistant he has been a part of championship cultures while working alongside some of the game’s best coaches.”
The 62-year-old Cignetti is the latest former Nick Saban assistant to get a Power 5 coaching job. He was Alabama’s wide receivers coach and recruiter coordinator from 2007-10, helping the Crimson Tide to the 2009 national championship.
Cignetti replaces Tom Allen, who was fired Sunday after seven years. The Hoosiers finished 3-9 in 2023, their third straight losing season.
“I am excited to lead this program forward and change the culture, mindset, and expectation level of Hoosier football,” Cignetti said. “I want to thank Director of Athletics Scott Dolson and President Pam Whitten, and I look forward to working with both in building something special at IU. Both share my vision and belief that big things are ahead for the IU program.”
Indiana hiring Cignetti leaves Houston and Duke as the lone Power 5 head-coaching openings. Boise State, New Mexico, Louisiana-Monroe, UTEP, Middle Tennessee and now James Madison also have vacancies on the Group of 5 level.
