Huntsville Player of the Week for Week 14 is fourth for his team

The Week 14 Huntsville Player of the Week turned in another outstanding performance to earn his first player of the week balloting win this season and the fourth for his team.

Senior Ken Cherry of Madison Academy ran for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns – including the game-winner with 19 seconds remaining – as the Mustangs advanced to this week’s Class 3A state playoff semifinals. Cherry also ran for the 2-point conversion that gave second-ranked Madison Academy its 35-28 win over Sylvania.

Cherry has 2,539 rushing yards this season with 37 touchdowns on the ground. For his illustrious career, the 6-foot, 187-pound speedster has 3,895 yards rushing with 57 touchdowns.

Cherry got 59 percent of the 663 votes in this week’s poll.

Madison Academy (13-0) will travel to Geraldine (12-1) on Friday for a spot in the Super 7.

Quarterback Jake Poldiak was the player of the week twice this season, in Week 5 and Week 12, and linebacker Brandon Tanner was last week’s top vote-getter.

Westminster Christian quarterback Brandon Musch was second in the balloting after he ran for 261 yards and 6 touchdowns and completed 10-of-12 passes for 68 yards in a 48-27 win over Brooks. Westminster Christian (11-2) hosts Cherokee County (12-1) in the semifinals on Friday.

Guntersville quarterback Eli Morrison was third in the voting after he hit 19-of-33 passes for 193 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran for another in a 31-21 win over Pleasant Grove. The Wildcats are 12-1 and will travel to Legion Field to meet defending Class 5A champion Ramsay (11-2) in Friday’s semifinals.

Voting this week for a statewide player of the week from semifinal action begins on Sunday and will run through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.

In Week 14, more than 22,500 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
