Level 1 risk for severe weather Friday and Saturday
There will be a low-end risk for a few severe storms in Alabama on both Friday and Saturday, according to forecasters.
All of Alabama should receive some needed rain, however, and it could add up to several inches in some areas.
The threat for stronger storms is expected to be confined to the southern half of Alabama both days.
The most likely time for stronger storms will be later on Friday into the day on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a Level 1 out of 5 (or marginal) risk in place for all of south Alabama and the southern part of central Alabama on Friday.
There will also be a Level 1 risk on Saturday for just south Alabama.
Friday’s severe weather outlook is at the top of this post. Below is the outlook for Saturday:
A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible. The weather service said the strongest storms could have damaging wind gusts and heavy rain. A brief tornado will also be possible.
Forecasters will be watching the movement of a warm front that is expected to be draped across the southern part of the state on Friday and Saturday. Areas south of the front will be in the most favorable location for stronger storms. Severe storms aren’t expected north of the front.
There is some question about how far north the front will move, so it’s possible the severe weather threat will not reach as far northward as it is now forecast to go, according to the weather service. Forecasters will be closely tracking the front through the day on Friday and into Saturday.
Rain chances will go up starting later today for Alabama, and rain will be possible through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Parts of Alabama could get several inches of much-needed rain from tonight through the weekend. Here is the three-day precipitation outlook from NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center:
Parts of the state could get at least 3 inches of rain through Sunday. The rain is very much needed because of Alabama’s ongoing drought. A new U.S. Drought Monitor report on Alabama’s drought conditions is scheduled to be released later today.
Look for warmer temperatures, more humidity and higher rain chances starting later this afternoon and especially tonight.
Rain will be possible off and on through Sunday, then drier weather will take hold as the new work week begins.
