Beloved Pete the Cat now has his own groovy coffee

It’s cool being Pete the Cat.

The groovy cartoon kitty created by Alabama native James Dean stars in more than 100 children’s books, has appeared in his own Amazon Prime TV series, and is immortalized with a massive mural and a Hollywood Walk of Fame-style sidewalk star in Dean’s hometown of Fort Payne.

Now, the hippest cat around has his own coffee, too.

Athens, Ga.-based Jittery Joe’s Coffee recently released Pete’s Groovy Brew, a medium-roast coffee packaged in a bright yellow collectible canister that features the famous feline.

Dean, who now lives in Athens and is a big fan of the local coffee roaster, not only designed the can but also collaborated with Jittery Joe’s on the coffee, Michael Ripps, the company’s president and co-owner, says.

“James has been in Athens for a while, and I think he’s always been a customer and a fan (of Jittery Joe’s),” Ripps tells AL.com. “Some of his early paintings had Pete drinking a cup of coffee, and he painted a couple of pieces that had Jittery Joe’s in there.”

Jittery Joe’s has previously partnered with such musical artists as Widespread Panic and Drive-By Truckers to create their own specialty coffees, so, when Dean visited the Jittery Joe’s roasting facility a few months ago, Ripps says, they pitched the idea of doing a coffee for Pete the Cat.

(Like Dean, Ripps is an Alabama native. He was born and raised in Mobile before eventually settling in Athens about 15 years ago. “That was another thing that James and I connected on, our Alabama roots,” Ripps says.)

“Next thing you know, he did this beautiful, neat design that’s on the can,” Ripps says. “Then we worked with him on finding a coffee that he liked and thought would be a big hit with the parents of the kids who love Pete the Cat.”

The medium-roast coffee — which is available online at the Jittery Joe’s website and at Jittery Joe’s locations in Geogia — is made with a blend of beans from Peru and Guatemala.

“We wanted something that’s not too dark and has mainstream appeal,” Ripps says. “Those two beans are two of our more popular beans, and roasted together and blended, it makes a nice cup of coffee.”

On the side of the can, petethecat.com gives the groovy, new this ringing, rhyming endorsement:

“The birds are singing, the sky is bright, the sun is shining, and Pete’s new Jittery Joe’s coffee will start your day off ALRIGHT! With a medium body and nutty accents, this groovy, one-of-a-kind brew will keep you walking along and singing your song all day long.”

Pete’s Groovy Brew sells for $18.99 for a 12-ounce can, and it is available as a whole bean or a medium grind. A portion of the sales go to the American Library Association.

Early next year, Jittery Joe’s also plans to introduce a Pete the Cat hot chocolate that will be packaged in another collectible can that Dean will design, Ripps says. It will be the Athens coffee company’s first venture into hot chocolate.

“Coffee is for the parents; hot chocolate will be for the kids,” Ripps says. “We’re really particular about sourcing good products, so just like the coffee, we will source chocolate that we think will be a really good product for the market.”
