Auburn NFL roundup: Daniel Carlson ties NFL record
When Las Vegas Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson connected on a 57-yard field goal in the fourth quarter against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, he not only equaled the longest field goal of his NFL career, he also tied the league single-season record for field goals of 50 or more yards.
Carlson made all six of his kicks – another field goal from 20 yards and four extra-points, including one that sent the game into overtime with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter.
But Carlson didn’t get a chance to kick in overtime on Sunday as the 49ers returned an interception to the Las Vegas 7-yard line in the extra period and posted a 37-34 victory.
Carlson’s 57-yard field goal had tied the game at 27-27 with 4:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Carlson also had a 57-yard field goal in Las Vegas’ 22-16 overtime victory against the Denver Broncos on Nov. 20. That field goal came with 7:06 left in the fourth quarter and tied the score at 13-13.
Carlson’s 57-yard field goal on Sunday was his 10th of 50 or more yards in 2022 to tie the NFL single-season record established by the Minnesota Vikings’ Blair Walsh in 2012 and equaled by the Baltimore Ravens’ Justin Tucker in 2016.
Carlson was among the 21 former Auburn players who got on the field on the 17th Sunday of the NFL’s 103rd season.
One other former Auburn player was involved in the San Francisco-Las Vegas game:
· Jarrett Stidham started at quarterback for the Raiders. In his first NFL start, Stidham completed 23-of-34 passes for 365 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions and ran for 34 yards on seven carries. The only other player in NFL history with at least 365 passing yards and three touchdown passes in his first start is Mike White in the New York Jets’ 34-31 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 31, 2021. Stidham opened the scoring with a 24-yard pass to tight end Darren Waller with 11:40 left in the first quarter. Stidham connected with Davante Adams on a 4-yard touchdown pass as Las Vegas took a 17-14 lead with 10 seconds left in the first half and a 60-yard touchdown pass to push the Raiders’ lead to 24-14 with 10:22 left in the third quarter.
