Alabama men’s basketball outpaces Oregon for 99-91 win
After losing its first game of the season, Alabama men’s basketball had four starters reach double-digit points, two setting season-highs, in a bounce-back win over Oregon.
The No. 17 Crimson Tide improved to 5-1 with a 99-91 victory. It was the consolation side of the Emerald Coast Classic played in Niceville, Florida.
UA shot 50% from the field, outrebounding the Ducks (4-2) 40-28. Yet, with Oregon shooting 52.2% from the field and 35% from 3-point range, it wasn’t the defensive turnaround head coach Nate Oats desired after a Friday night loss against Ohio State.
Mark Sears scored 27 points, leading all scorers, with three steals. Aaron Estrada led Alabama with a trio of 3-pointers, also scoring 22 total points with four assists and four rebounds. Rylan Griffen added 17 points.
“It is good to come out of here with a win,” Oats said. ” … Mark (Sears) played significantly harder, was really locked in tonight and led our team in blue-collar points and ended up with seven rebounds as a guard. He drove the ball downhill and I thought he was really into it on defense and I thought our team was better defensively.
“We are still making way too many defensive mistakes but I thought our effort was good. We did a better job on the glass, we stepped up to the free throw line and only missed two free throws so to go 26-28 from the line is impressive.”
The Tide overcame a seven-point deficit in the first half and held off Oregon’s late rally. The Tide has scored at least 98 points in each of its victories this season.
It’ll be back in Coleman Coliseum on Tuesday night against Clemson (5-0) for the ACC/SEC Challenge at 8:30 p.m. CT.
